The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board approved the request to reorganize the Department of Journalism into a separate school on April 8th, 2009.

Mitch Land, Director of the Mayborn Graduate School of Journalism and chairman of the journalism department, believes this change will positively influence the school.

“Our opportunities are greater as far as national visibility and opportunity for finding partnerships and funding sources and other kinds of opportunities to compete nationally,” said Land.

Changes for the transition include a search for a new dean and additional faculty. Land feels the Journalism Department faculty and administration are ready and eager for the switch. He said he believes journalism students will be pleased too.

“I tell you the students have the most to gain out of this because the students will be able then to refer to their experience and their education at the Mayborn at UNT…because now they have a name,” said Land.
